At 6-foot-7, 215 pounds, Dimond High's Ryden Hines made his presence known on the basketball court as a third-team all-state performer last winter.

Friday night under the Anchorage Football Stadium lights, Hines and his Lynx teammates presented themselves as formidable foes in the race for Cook Inlet Conference playoff positions, scoring 26 unanswered points en route to a 32-14 demolition of the fourth-ranked Bartlett Golden Bears.

Hines made explosive play after explosive play, none larger than the punt he blocked that led to the first of Nathan Stephens' three third-quarter touchdowns.

When first-year Dimond coach Chris Borst gathered his squad for a jubilant postgame discussion, he reminded the Lynx of the things he'd told them repeatedly throughout the season. They simply needed to come out and play an entire game, he said. Then they could play with anybody.

"We just beat a good football team," Borst said. "Those guys are the defending state champs."

Hines, a football player since fourth grade who played quarterback growing up, made the move to tight end for his junior year.

He caught two passes Friday, the first a 34-yard circus grab that appeared to hit off two Bartlett defenders before he hauled it in along the sidelines in the second quarter.

The second was an 11-yard flare from Dwayne Carter in the right corner of the end zone with 6 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown broke a 6-6 tie.

But Hines' biggest highlight of the night was still to come.

Dimond owned a 12-6 lead when Bartlett took over on its own 17-yard line. Three straight runs totaled eight yards. On fourth-and-2 from the 25, Hines busted in and blocked Bartlett's punt and the Lynx recovered the bouncing ball at the Golden Bears' 7-yard line.

Stephens scored on a 5-yard run two plays later.

In the next 3 minutes, 38 seconds of game time, Dimond recovered a Bartlett fumble that led to Stephens' 63-yard scoring scamper, and then the Lynx squibbed a kickoff off the Golden Bears and recovered the loose ball at the Bartlett 29. On the next play, Stephens ran left, spun around a defender and scored.

And suddenly, Dimon led 32-6 with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Hines didn't have to think long when asked to rate the biggest of his many accomplishments.

"The punt block is first because it changed the momentum of the game and got our team pumped up," he said. "Our big guys in the middle blocked everybody, so I had a free lane to go."

Stephens finished 155 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Spearheaded by the spirited play of senior inside linebacker Garrick Sargento, Dimond's defense held Bartlett to 62 second-half rushing yards.

Bartlett coach John Jessen's teams have historically been enthusiastic and disciplined. But the Golden Bears hurt themselves in many ways, including twice with unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties on the way to 115 total penalty yards.

"I've been saying the same thing all year, we have a young team, and we played young in a negative way tonight," Jessen said. "But I'm behind these kids 100 percent and we're going to focus on our next two games to make sure we get back to the playoffs."

Bartlett junior Keenan Honore scored both his team's touchdowns and finished with 117 rushing yards on 11 carries. Stephens finished 155 rushing yards.
