Gov. Sean Parnell ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff Thursday in honor of former state Sen. Kathryn "Kay" Poland, who died in Anchorage last week. She was 90.
"Sen. Poland will be remembered for her passion for Alaska and her service to her community," Parnell said. Poland was appointed March 6, 1970, to fill the vacancy left by her husband in the state Legislature. She continued to serve in the Alaska Senate until 1979, representing the Kodiak-Aleutian District, the governor's office said.
