KTUU-TV reports Keane "Alex" Crawford was sentenced this week to 104 years with 30 years suspended.
Crawford acknowledged shooting Anthony Brown in 2008 but claimed he was defending himself.
He represented himself during the trial.
A state jury convicted Crawford in February of second-degree murder and assault stemming from the Dec. 6, 2008, shooting death of Brown, 40, his sister's boyfriend.
According to prosecutors, Crawford and Brown got into a fight while drinking at Brown's home on West 45th Avenue after Crawford punched his wife in the eye. Brown intervened and Crawford shot Brown several times with a pistol.
Crawford ran unsuccessfully for an East Anchorage Assembly seat in 2007.
