Police say David Coleman, 27, was biking westbound on O'Malley at 7 p.m. Tuesday when the empty trailer came loose from a three-quarter-ton Dodge pickup as it passed the Seward Highway overpass.
The trailer plowed into Coleman and lodged against a sign and light post on the north side of the road, said Lt. David Parker, a police spokesman.
Police today identified the driver of the pickup as Jeffery Binegar, 47, of Anchorage.
The single-axle boat trailer belonged to a friend of Binegar's, Parker said. It was not attached to the truck with a safety chain, as is required by law, police said.
Parker said he doesn't know if the driver will be cited or charged in the accident, which is being investigated.
Coleman is being treated at Providence Alaska Medical Center. He declined an interview request made through the hospital Wednesday. Binegar couldn't be reached for comment.
The cyclist was wearing a helmet, which was damaged in the crash, Parker said.
