Fort Rich soldier who died at home identified

EAGLE RIVER -- Fort Richardson said a soldier who died in his Eagle River home last weekend was Sgt. David R. Gerhart from Dallas. He was found unresponsive last Saturday by his wife, who then called 911. Anchorage police and fire department responders could not revive him.

Gerhart, 27, was an infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson said.

He joined the Army in August 2005 and arrived at Fort Richardson in February 2006. He deployed to Iraq in 2006 for 15 months and to Afghanistan in 2009 for 12 months, the Army said.

The cause of his death is unknown and is under investigation by local authorities, the Army said.
