The upperclassmen had the upper hand Friday at the ACS Class Challenge, which drew runners from more than 20 high schools for a cross country race around Cheney Lake.
The race was split into two divisions -- one for freshmen and sophomores, the other for juniors and seniors.
And in both the boys and the girls competition, the fastest times were registered by upperclassmen.
Noah Ripley, a junior from Wasilla, set the pace for boys in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 12.9 seconds. He nipped Brett Chase, a senior from Seward, by 1.1 seconds in the junior-senior race and was about 25 seconds faster than Miles Knotek, a sophomore from Seward whose time of 10:37.30 won the freshman-sophomore race.
Kailey Wilson, a junior from Kenny Lake, dominated the girls competition by winning in 11:36.
The second-fastest time came from Wasilla's Jenna Ford, who won the freshman-sophomore race in 12:01.3. Third place overall went to Mariah Applegate, a junior from Grace Christian who clocked 12:10.4.
The race attracted hundreds of runners from around the state who are in the Anchorage area for a pair of big meets today -- the Dimond Lynx Invitational at Kincaid Park and the Palmer Invitational at Palmer High.
