Usually, when you think of staying in hostels, visions of backpacking through Europe on a dime are conjured up. But these inexpensive abodes abound in Alaska too. Although some hostels offer private rooms, they often are cramped bunk bed-style quarters shared by strangers. But as you bond through your mutual love of adventure and frugality, you just might make some new friends for life.

The Talkeetna Hostel is nestled in the woods, within walking distance of downtown. Cook meals in the shared kitchen or use the outdoor barbecue. Bunk rooms are $22 a night and private rooms and a cabin are also available. You can even rent an old Volkswagen van for a cozy night. Get inspired by your surroundings and contribute a piece of your own artwork to the Hosteler's Art Wall.

The Denali Mountain Morning Hostel sits next to Carlos Creek in Denali National Park. There are women's and men's bunk rooms, as well as coed ones. The cost is $32 per person or $55 for a double bed for two. There are also numerous private cabins dotting the property that range from $80 to $160 per night. All linens, pillows, blankets and sleeping bags are provided free.

Mossy's Alaska Seaside Farm in Homer offers you a chance to stay at a working organic farm and pick and eat from their raspberry patch and then wander down their private beach access path. Bunks are $20 a night. Or pay a bit more to stay in the Seashell Cabin, Rose Cottage or the Wildflower Cabin. A meadow overlooking Kachemak Bay, with mountainous views, provides perfect camping options.

Alyeska Hostel is the perfect place to wind down after a day of strenuous outdoor fun. Dorm-style bunks are $20 a night. Private rooms that can accommodate up to four people run from $40 to $80. The summer cabin is $65-$85 per night.
