Murkowski to Miller: Return farm subsidies

Published: September 23, 2010

Sen. Lisa Murkowski wants conservative Joe Miller to repay the federal government $13,677 for farm subsidies he received for land in Kansas in the 1990s plus interest. The Alaska Dispatch reported that Miller received $7,235 in federal farm subsidies from 1991 to '97.

Murkowski says Miller should have come clean about the subsidies sooner.

A spokesman for Miller says Murkowski is attempting to divert attention from her own spending record.

Randy Desoto says Murkowski's concern about farm payments received 13 to 20 years ago seems misplaced in light of the more than $800 billion she cost American taxpayers by voting for the bailout of financial institutions in 2008.

Miller beat Murkowski in last month's GOP primary. Murkowski has since mounted a write-in campaign.
