An Anchorage Police Department prostitution sting resulted in charges against Lt. Daniel Shrader on July 8, police said. He was charged with solicitation of prostitution, a misdemeanor.
Shrader offered an undercover detective $40 for oral sex at about 6:30 p.m. in the Turnagain-Spenard area of Anchorage, police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Investigators recognized Shrader, who was driving a 2005 Chevy pickup, as a fellow law enforcement officer, Parker said.
Police impounded the truck, the airport police department was notified and one of Shrader's co-workers drove him home, Parker said.
The case is still open and being handled under a pre-trial conversion system, a sort of probationary period during which Shrader can avoid prosecution with good behavior.
Shrader is still on patrol, Burkmire said. The department's investigation will continue pending any action by prosecutors, she said.
"We'll review it at that time and make a decision," Burkmire said.
Police charged five other men that night, Parker said. All of them received the same treatment from police, he said. Depending on the severity of the crime and any past arrests, the same standard procedure would be followed for any law enforcement officer, Parker said.
"He got the same treatment by our officers, placed in handcuffs, the vehicle was seized and he was cited and released," Parker said.
"We played it by the book; there's no thin blue line here."
A spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers said their agency would have handled the case similarly.
Municipal prosecutors did not return requests for comment.
Court records show Shrader's arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 14.
