The wreck closed the highway for hours, but one lane was reopened Thursday night for alternating traffic with a minimal wait, according to area emergency dispatch.
Early responders estimated about half the truck contents spilled, said Neil Huddleston, an environmental program specialist for the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The fuel soaked a 7-by-10-foot area but none was spotted in the river, Huddleston said.
The truck belongs to Big State Logistics, which has offices in Valdez and Fairbanks, Huddleston said.
Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the truck driver was injured, but she had no details of the extent of injuries or the cause of the crash. She said troopers took a call on the wreck at 4:10 p.m.
Huddleston said the truck had either rolled over or onto its side and came to rest against the guardrail, remaining partially on the road, about 50 yards from Chickaloon Road. From the road, the river's edge was 200 feet away, down a a steep embankment at perhaps 45 degrees, Huddleston said.
"Fuel had run off the road and down this embankment," he said.
Fuel flowed from one of the tanker's hatches, Huddleston said, at a rate of 3 to 5 gallons per minute but was stopped.
Big State Logistics mobilized its own responders, he said, and hired a contractor from Palmer to work on spill cleanup.
Two DEC responders were heading to the site with boom and absorbent material. They were ready to use the material themselves, as well as oversee the company's response, Huddleston said.
