State's best are a Cougar and Star

FOOTBALL: Soldotna player is 1st team rb, kicker and punter.

October 19, 2010

Service's Michael McCrae was named offensive player of the year for the large schools and Soldotna's Robbie Smithwick, who earned three first-team honors for the undefeated state champion Stars, was named offensive player of the year for the small schools by members of the Alaska Coaches Association.

Smithwick was named a first-team running back, kicker and punter for 11-0 Soldotna, which pummeled rival Kenai 77-42 on Saturday. Smithwick rushed five times for 98 yards and three touchdowns, and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Service fell one win short of the large-schools championship, losing 6-0 to West on Saturday. For Service to be shut out was a surprise to many, mostly because of McCrae's impressive statistics: In 11 games, he rushed for 1,997 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The West defense responsible for the shutout was coordinated by assistant coach of the year Josh Garcia and led by defensive player of the year Lyndon Tulimasaelii. West's Jacob Eisses and Iva Tuaato were also named to the first-team defense. Eisses and Tulimasaelii anchored the Eagles' talented defensive line, and Tuaato played linebacker.

The West offense is represented by wide receiver J'Vonte Buster, who scored the championship game's only touchdown, and wide receiver Will Sharp, who combined with Buster to help first-team quarterback Conor Feckley accumulate 2,248 passing yards.

Colony's Dakota Wainwright and Trey Farber each made the first team for offense and defense. On offense, Wainwright played fullback and Monson played tackle, and both were linebackers on defense.

Colony's Brian McIntosh was named coach of the year after his Knights started the season with two tough non-conference losses, but rebounded to win seven straight games before losing to Service in the state semifinals.

Inside linebacker Kyle Rogers of Kenai was named defensive player of the year in the small schools, even though Soldotna amassed 641 rushing yards in the title game.

Soldotna's Dakota Elsey was named lineman of the year, while Ted Riddell earned coach of the year honors for leading Nikiski to the Greatland Conference championship with a 6-0 league mark. Nikiski lost to Homer in the first round of the playoffs.

"(Elsey) is as good of a guard as we've had," Soldotna Coach Galen Brantley Jr. told the Peninsula Clarion. Brantley said Elsey plays pulling guard on offense, and great guards are critical to Soldotna's signature Wing-T offense.

Soldotna had six players on the first-team offense and five on the first-team defense.

Rogers, a first-team inside linebacker and guard, is a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder Kenai coach Jeff Baker calls the best physical athlete he's ever coached -- faster than teammate A.J. Hull, the first-team quarterback and defensive back.

"We played Service, and we watched West play," Baker told the Clarion. "I didn't see another player out there like him."
