Follow AFN convention on radio, TV, Web

The Alaska Federation of Natives Convention opens today at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. Proceedings will be carried live starting at 8:30 a.m. on ARCS (the Alaska Rural Communications Service), GCI cable channels 1 and 15, and webcast at www.360north.org and www. nativefederation.org. The coverage will be hosted by Sharon McConnell and Anna Sattler for Blueberry Productions.

On the radio, KNBA 90.3 FM will broadcast the convention from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., hosted by KNBA news and public affairs producer Joaqlin Estus. The broadcasts will feature daily Native language reports in Athabascan, Yup'ik and Inupiaq.

Today's events have been scheduled as follows:

8 a.m.: Tanana Traditional dancers.

8:30 a.m.: Call to order by AFN Chair Albert Kookesh.

8:35 a.m.: Grand opening celebration.

9:15 a.m.: Welcoming remarks by mayors of Fairbanks, North Pole and the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

9:30 a.m.: Address by Gov. Sean Parnell.

9:50 a.m.: Report from AFN President Julie Kitka.

10:05 a.m.: Address by U.S. Rep. Don Young.

10:25 a.m.: Keynote address by Gloria O'Neill.

10:50 a.m.: Announcement of AFN Citizen of the Year and Denali Award.

11:05 a.m.: Report from First Alaskans Elders/Youth Conference by Janie Leask.

11:20 a.m.: Guest speaker Jackie Johnson Pata, executive director, National Congress of American Indians.

11:35 a.m.: Guest speaker Aqqaluk Lynge of Greenland, chair, Inuit Circumpolar Conference.

1 p.m.: Tagiugmiut Dancers of Barrow

1:30 p.m.: Call to order

1:35 p.m.: Guest speaker Graham Smith, president, Maori University.

1:50 p.m.: Alaska State Legislature Bush Caucus report by state Rep. Reggie Joule

2:05 p.m.: Address by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski

2:25 p.m.: Guest speaker Byron Mallott, First Alaskans Institute

2:45 p.m.: Guest speaker former Sen. Georgianna Lincoln

3 p.m.: Convention discussion on Village Survival

Native music and dance starts at 7 p.m. and includes the following groups in performances of about 30 minutes each:
