In a press release issued Friday, Becky Schwanke with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said 1,404 bulls and 547 cows have been taken in the federal and state subsistence hunts.
The harvest quota is 1,500 bulls and 800 cows.
Schwanke said the rebounding Nelchina herd is healthy, with females calves weighing more than normal and the herd's population estimated to be 5,000 animals above the ideal range of 35,000-40,000 animals.
Hunters are reminded to turn in their permit cards promptly.
