Anchorage firefighters responded to a call at 5:42 a.m. about the fire. When they arrived, the fire was burning from the basement to the roof. It took a little more than 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, said Don Tallman, lead dispatcher for the Anchorage Fire Department.
One person was at home but that person escaped uninjured. The Red Cross has helped obtain shelter for that person because the house is uninhabitable, Tallman said.
The department's preliminary conclusion is that the fire was caused by careless use of cigarettes.
