Wear helmet, win prize at Alyeska

January 11, 2011

Ski patrollers on Mount Alyeska will soon be handing out prizes to boarders and skiers wearing helmets.

The campaign begins Saturday and runs through Friday, Jan. 21, as part of the National Safety Awareness Week program administered by the National Ski Area Association.

Prizes will include free midweek lift tickets, hot ski waxes, snowboard leashes and more.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, there will be informational booths at the day lodge and Orthopedic Physicians Anchorage will host short sessions on knee-injury prevention. Friends of the Chugach will offer avalanche awareness drills in the EZ Searcher Beacon Park.

Throughout the week, the Mountain Learning Center will offer complimentary one-hour ski and snowboard lessons to new participants as well as free terrain park and super pipe coaching.

Intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders will be able to join the Alyeska Ski Patrol on two end-of-day mountain sweeps. To participate, meet at the top of Chair 6 in front of the ski patrol building on Monday or Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 3:30 p.m.

The week ends with a fundraiser for the Alyeska Resort Ski Patrol Avalanche Dog Program. A benefit auction for an early morning ski with the patrollers of their choice will start at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the Sitzmark Bar & Grill.
