People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals today is taking credit for the cancellation of Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race "sponsorship" by the federal Transportation Security Administration. PETA this week sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano complaining the agency was linked to a "cruel" event and saying it should "stick to keeping our airplanes and railroads safe." The TSA told The Washington Post it never intended to be a sponsor, though its logo appears on the race sponsorship Web page. TSA spokesman Nick Kimball said the agency intended only to use the race to recruit security employees for Alaska airports.
PETA initially pegged the sponsorship deal at $100,000, but TSA's recruitment plans, similar to those used to promote the 2010 Census, would have cost the agency about $85,000, Kimball said.
"We focus on geographically-targeted recruitment to help us enlist employees to work in local airports," Kimball said in a statement. "However, this particular recruitment effort has been canceled because TSA never intended to have the appearance of sponsorship. We will take steps to discontinue this particular initiative and recoup associated costs."
