The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported there are still plenty of caribou hanging around. State game managers are also allotting an additional 70 caribou from the Taylor Highway hunt to the Steese Highway hunt because biologists don't think the herd will make it back to the Taylor Highway by the end of the hunting season on Feb. 28.

The addition means the remaining quota for the Steese Highway hunt now stands at 165 caribou.

At about 51,000 animals, the Fortymile herd is the largest caribou herd in Interior Alaska.
