Not comic books

Oh, it doesn't matter what you call those picture-and-words literary forms. But if you want to know how to do it, 49 Alaska Writing Center, now located at 645 W. Third Ave. will offer a Graphic Novel Writing Workshop taught by Lee Post, 1-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday. The cost is $119-$129. More information at 49writingcenter.org or e-mail 49writers@gmail.com.

Toxic/Mozart/Vampire

The Calder Quartet excels in Mozart and Brahms, but they've made a splash by collaborating with famed contemporary minimalist Terry Riley and indie rock bands like The Airborne Toxic Event and Vampire Weekend. Whatever they have in mind for their Discovery Theatre concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight, it should be interesting. Tickets are $35-$42 centertix.net

Idita-shows

There will be no shortage of art shows connecting themselves to the start of the Iditarod Race on Saturday. Two deserve special mention because they feature work by people who have actually been on the trail: Jon Van Zyle's 36th Annual Iditarod Art Show is on display at Artic Rose Gallery, 420 L St. Meet Jon and have him sign his work from 5-9 p.m. tonight. And Rose Albert will be the featured artist this month at the Alaska Native Art Foundation gallery at 500 W. Sixth Ave., starting at 5 p.m. Word is that champion Lance Mackey will be there. Stop by and say howdy.
