Stevens, who spent 40 years in the U.S. Senate, was revered for bringing home projects and federal aid to help build up the state. A corruption conviction in 2008 ended his political career but a federal judge overturned it, finding that prosecutors had withheld evidence at trial.

Stevens died in a plane crash last August.

The bill as initially proposed would have set aside Stevens' birthday, Nov. 18. Stevens' family asked the day be moved to summer.

Stevens' daughter, Lily Stevens Becker, testified that some of her fondest memories with her dad were during the summer, and the change would allow for Alaskans to celebrate Stevens' memory outdoors.
