Kaiser leads Kobuk 440 sled dog race

Bethel's Pete Kaiser was the first musher into Selawik, arriving with his team of 10 dogs at 6:15 p.m. Saturday to take the lead in the Kobuk 440 sled dog race.

Kaiser arrived more than an hour ahead of Ken Anderson and his 10 dogs, who came in at 7:33 p.m. Cynthia Berrand, a 35-year-old handler for Iditarod champion John Baker, and her team of 11 dogs were third to the checkpoint at 8:04 p.m.

From Selawik, mushers travel 40 miles to Noorvik and then 65 miles to the finish line in Kotzebue, completing the 438-mile race that began Thursday afternoon. The winner will be awarded $12,000.
