Police seek help identifying person behind wheel.

Anchorage police are looking for a hit-and-run driver they say struck and killed a pedestrian early Sunday on Tudor Road.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating the vehicle and identifying the driver.

A woman called 911 just after 3:15 a.m. to report the incident on the Tudor overpass of the Seward Highway. She was too distraught to give much information, so handed the phone to a cabdriver who had pulled over to help. The cabdriver was able to relay some information to dispatch.

Police identified the victim as Hubert Tunuchuk II, 28.

They believe he was walking with a small group of friends westbound on Tudor when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling eastbound. The driver fled the scene. Witnesses gave differing descriptions of the vehicle, said Marlene Lammers, a police spokeswoman.

Tunuchuk was rushed to a local hospital with severe head and internal injuries. He died just before 7 a.m. Sunday.

Anchorage police ask anyone with information to contact them at 786-8900. People who want to remain anonymous, and be eligible for a cash reward, can call Crime Stoppers at 561-7867 or submit a tip on the organization's secure website at www.anchoragecrimestoppers.com.
