Beer thief smashes through Juneau brewery door with car

May 3, 2011

It was a "smash and grab" kind of crime, says Ashley Johnston of Alaskan Brewing Co. in Juneau. Someone drove a vehicle through the brewery's front door early Friday and stole "a few six-packs" from its retail store. Juneau police believe they rescued most of the beer before it was consumed, reports KTOO via the Alaska Public Radio Network.

Acting on a tip Friday afternoon, Juneau police served a search warrant on a Switzer Village trailer, where they recovered most of the beer.

54-year-old Michael Rae was arrested on a variety of charges, including burglary in the second degree and theft in the third degree. He's also charged with vehicle theft, because the automobile he rammed into the store front was apparently stolen from a nearby business.

Johnston says damage to the brewery is about $15,000. Read more, or listen to the audio report, at APRN.
