Cruise ship hits fixed ice; some damage but hull not breached

Published: May 11, 2011

A 935-foot cruise ship sustained damage after hitting fixed ice in Southeast Alaska. Holland America's Westerdam suffered damage about 15 feet below the water line Tuesday night while maneuvering through ice near Hubbard Glacier in Yakutat Bay.

The Coast Guard on Wednesday said it is investigating the incident. The agency said the Westerdam's hull was reportedly not breached, and there had been no reports of injuries or pollution.

The Coast Guard met the Westerdam in Sitka.

Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in North America.
