Governor doesn't plan special session on coastal zone

Published: May 18, 2011

JUNEAU -- A spokeswoman says Gov. Sean Parnell does not plan to call a special session to address the coastal management program.

Without intervention, the program will expire by the start of the next fiscal year, July 1.

The program became a casualty of the special session's rushed ending. The House failed to agree to a proposed compromise that would have revamped the program and extended the life of it until 2017. The House then abruptly adjourned, dooming the program unless the governor intervened.

House Republican leaders have defended their action, saying they'd worked to try to get an agreeable compromise and couldn't see waiting around several more days in the hopes one would be reached.

The opt-in program allows states to put conditions on certain activities on federal lands and waters.
