Top seeds win with ease in CIC tourney openers

The top-seeded South girls and Dimond boys throttled teams from Bartlett to easily advance to today's semifinals of the Cook Inlet Conference girls soccer tournament. South beat the Golden Bears 8-0 and Dimond grabbed a 6-0 victory.

Travis Merritt scored two goals for the Dimond boys, including the game-winner, while the South girls got goals or assists from nine players.

Thursday's first round featured eight matches at three locations -- Anchorage Football Stadium, Dimond ad Chugiak. All of the remaining action will be at AFS, including Saturday's championship matches.

All three of the early boys' games ended in shutouts. Besides Dimond's win over Bartlett, South blanked Eagle River 4-0 and Service stopped East 2-0. Chugiak and West met in the late game.

Service prevailed with a pair of goals by sophomore Adam Klie, who struck 90 seconds into the match on a pass from freshman Ihro Raguindin and again in the second half on a rocket volley off Eduardo Hernandez's cross. Conor Deal recorded the shutout.

In girls action, Service slipped past West 1-0, Dimond shut out East 6-0 and Chugiak topped Eagle River 6-1 to join South in today's semifinals.

Meghan Dotten's header off a corner kick in the second half lifted Service to victory, while Kelly Cobb's three goals and two assists powered Chugiak. Holly Brehmer added two goals and Sue Fleurant scored once for the Mustangs, who lost the shutout when Eagle River's Jackie Klecha scored the match's final goal.

Dimond's Bobbye Pendleton scored two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to break open a scoreless game and the Lynx rolled from there, getting additional goals from Lizzie Gogolowski, Jocelyn Humble, Jessica Todd and Haley Martin .

Just about everyone contributed to the scoring in South's win over Bartlett. Three players had a pair of goals -- Morgan Hooe, Jessica Harmon and Georgianna Hoss, who also added an assist. Bailey Butcher notched two assists and one goal, while Kayla Cossaboom racked the other goal. Assists came from Lexy Cardwell, Kaitlyn Zanders, Andrea Isby and Bonnie Gale, who handed out two, and goalkeeper Sarah Johnson picked up the shutout.

Region III tourney

The Palmer boys soccer team beat Homer on penalty kicks after the teams dueled to a 1-1 tie, earning the Moose a shot at Grace Christian in today's semifinals of the Region III soccer tournament at Colony.

Grace advanced with a 3-1 win over Nikiski. The Grizzlies will meet the Moose at 1 p.m. today. At 5 p.m., Wasilla meets Colony in the other semifinal; Wasilla advanced by nipping Soldotna 2-1 and Colony steamrolled Kenai 7-1.

In girls action, Wasilla beat Kenai 4-1 while Soldotna, Kenai and Colony all posted shutouts. Soldotna edged Grace Christian 1-0 and will play Wasilla at 11 a.m. The 3 p.m. semifinalf will feature Kenai, which beat Palmer 3-0, and Colony, a 5-0 winner over Skyview.
