An ice jam on the Kobuk River near the village caused water levels to rise Thursday and Friday. Elders were evacuated to the village clinic, where reports said water was about a foot away from coming inside, according to the National Weather Service River Forecast Center.
Ice was holding steady downriver from Kobuk on Saturday, and while water levels remained above flood stage, there were no reports of damaged houses.
Chunks of ice were seen in the village and made travel by boat difficult, according to National Weather Service reports.
Forecasters expected rain in the area to cause water levels to rise slowly until the ice jam releases. If the ice jam holds for an extended period of time, major flooding could occur, according to the River Forecast Center.
