Dimond goalie blanks boys Cook Inlet soccer tournament

BOYS SOCCER: Andrews doesn't allow a goal in three playoff matches.

Dimond goalie Tyler Andrews didn't allow a goal in three Cook Inlet Conference tournament soccer matches and capped his impressive run with a 1-0 win over South in Saturday's championship match.

For Andrews, the win at Anchorage Football Stadium wasn't cause for too much excitement, because it was only one step toward the team's ultimate goal of winning this week's state tournament.

"It's just another game," the sophomore said.

Dimond coach John Oliver said Andrews is a potential Division I goalie and a huge key to the team's success. He takes command, directs the defense and sets a tone for success, Oliver said.

"The goalkeeper is like the spine of the team," he said. "He has a lot of confidence. He's pretty stone cold."

The top-seeded Lynx took the lead in the 34th minute when junior Austin Portch headed the ball over the South goalie from close range. He received the ball in a crowd of players in front of the net, so the scene appeared more chaotic than it really was.

"It was a set piece," Portch said. "We've been working on it all week."

Portch said the Lynx came out aggressively in the second half, looking for an insurance goal, but when they didn't get it they settled into a defensive mode.

That's when second-seeded South started making some furious attacks on goal, but the Lynx defense held their ground, backed by a few nice saves by Andrews.

Oliver said he was content to see his team post the best regular-season record in the conference and a spot in the state tournament this week, so beating South for the CIC title, a year after losing the title match to South, made for a nice bonus.

"I'm happy for the boys," said Oliver. "It's kind of like a cherry on top."

If Dimond and South wind up facing each other again in the state title match this weekend, Oliver said he would be a happy coach.

"I always like to see Anchorage teams in the final," he said.

Service 2, West 0

Service notched two first-half goals and cruised to a 2-0 win over West in the boys CIC third-place match at AFS on Saturday, earning a spot in this week's state tournament and ending the Eagles season.

Ihro Raguindin struck first with a goal at the 10-minute mark and Codi Woodcock fired a rocket across the goal line at the 30-minute mark. Conner Pullen earned a shutout.
