CIRI plans to build a wind turbine farm on Fire Island. The deal with Chugach will allow them to put in the first phase of the farm, 11 turbines that can produce a maximum of 17.6 megawatts of electricity.
A Cook Inlet Region spokesman said this week that the CIRI board is scheduled to consider the same contract on Monday. After that, the agreement goes to the Regulatory Commission of Alaska for approval.
CIRI wants to begin producing wind power by late next year.
