Wasilla runner wins Gatorade girls track award

Junior Morgan Dampier, who set a state record in the 800 meters for the second straight year and led the Wasilla girls to their first state Class 4A championship, has been named the 2011 Gatorade Alaska girls state track and field athlete of the year. Dampier clocked 2 minutes, 10.42 seconds at the state meet in Fairbanks to obliterate her 2010 state record of 2:13.95 -- state records can only be set at the state meet.

Dampier also won the 400 in 57.43, finished second in the 100 and helped the Warriors' 1,600-meter relay team to a second-place finish.
