Glacier Bay speed limit set after numerous whale sightings

JUNEAU -- There's a speed limit in place in parts of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve near Juneau to protect the numerous humpback whales that have been sighted.

Superintendent Susan Boudreau says the speed limit for vessels is 13 knots, and it is in effect as of Thursday morning in lower Glacier Bay. It will remain in place until further notice.

She says this past week, at least 16 humpback whales were seen in the area.

The speed limit for boats and ships in lower Glacier Bay from May to September is normally 20 knots.
