A pilot flying near the McArthur River notified the Guard's Rescue Coordination Center that another pilot had flipped his plane in the area and appeared to have head injuries.
Guardsmen in an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter swooped in and landed on a sandbar near the river. They found the pilot near his plane and quickly determined he had head lacerations that would require stitches, according to a written statement from the National Guard.
The rescuers flew the man to Anchorage, where he was treated and released, according to the statement.
The National Guard did not say when the accident occurred and a spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Larry Lewis said his office was notified of the crash at about 1 p.m. The National Guard did not identify the pilot.
