AROUND THE HORN

— The Peninsula Oilers rode an early offensive surge and the arm of Jordan Mills to a 5-0 win over the Mat-Su Miners in an Alaska Baseball League game Tuesday night at Hermon Brothers Field, breaking a first-place tie between the teams.

After the Oilers scratched out two runs in the second inning, Troy Channing ripped a line-drive solo homer in the top of the third inning. The three-run outburst provided more than enough cushion for Mills, who pitched eight strong innings, allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking three on 98 pitches.

Miners’ starter Steven Bruce allowed four earned runs in the loss, the first earned runs he has allowed this season.

— The Anchorage Glacier Pilots used Keenyn Walker’s solo homer in the top of the 12th to take a one-run lead, but the Anchorage Bucs one-upped them with two runs in the bottom of the inning to earn a 4-3 ABL victory at Mulcahy Stadium.

Landon Anderson’s two-out, ground-rule double plated Matt Harjung with the tying run and Boomer Collins followed with a walk-off single. That made a winner out of reliever Connor Kendrick, who allowed just two hits in four innings.

Kendrick had faced the minimum 11 batters and struck out four in three-plus innings when Walker launched his solo homer.

The Bucs’ rally sent the Pilots to their third straight loss and 10th in the last 11 games. The Bucs snapped their four-game losing streak.

The Bucs’ rally came off Pilots reliever Cody Brown and ruined Trevor Bayless’ four innings of one-hit, five-strikeout relief.

The Bucs plated a run in both the first and third innings on delayed double steals. The Pilots countered with Dustin Torchio’s RBI single in the fourth and Walker’s RBI single in the seventh.
