AROUND THE HORN
— The Kenai Peninsula Oilers are on a serious roll — the kind of charge that sometimes results in a runaway pennant race.
Winning their fourth straight game, the Oilers scored five in the third inning (the second straight night they tallied big in the third) to defeat the Mat-Su Miners 7-3 on Monday.
Third baseman Patrick Wisdom, a sophomore from St. Mary’s (Calif.) College, smashed a three-run home run in the third and finished with four RBIs to pace Kenai.
Ben Griset started, went five innings, and got the win for the 19-9 Oilers.
The win gives first place Peninsula a two-game cushion over the Miners and the idle Anchorage Bucs with the season about one-half over.
— Kevin Hall scored the game’s only run but it was enough for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots and left-hander Tyler Linehan in defeating the Athletes in Action Fire on Monday 1-0 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
Linehan started, went eight and got the win. The Pilots pulled to within one game of AIA and getting out of the cellar.
— The Alaska League, and Bucs in particular, is pretty well represented in the major league All-Star game today in Phoenix. C.J. Wilson (Rangers), Jared Weaver (Angels) and Heath Bell (Padres) played for the Bucs in years past.
Representing the Glacier Pilots is Jacoby Ellsbury (Red Sox) while Michael Young (Rangers) played for the Fairbanks Goldpanners.
