AROUND THE HORN
-- The Anchorage Glacier Pilots took advantage of a big third inning Friday to crawl out of the Alaska Baseball League cellar with a 5-4 win over the Mat-Su Miners at Mulcahy Stadium.
Cael Brockmeyer's two-run base hit started the Pilots' four-run rally in the third, and an RBI base hit from Maxx Garrett capped the outburst to build a 5-0 lead.
The Miners mounted a late-game charge, scoring two in the sixth and two in the seventh and final inning. Wesley Jones led the Miners with a 3-for-3 performance that included an RBI double in the seventh.
Pilots reliever Derrick Dingeman (1-0) earned his first win, and Matt Applegate (3-1) suffered the loss for the Miners.
-- Adam Landecker's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning rescued the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Friday, providing the winning runs in a 4-3 ABL win over the Athletes in Action Fire at Mulcahy Stadium.
Trevor Bayless pitched the seventh and final inning to pick up his fourth save of the season, and Justin Kemp (2-0) pitched two innings of relief for a win.
It looked as though the Pilots might lose their second straight game to the Fire when Taylor Oldham scored on a base hit by Marc Schoch in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Fire a 3-2 lead. Jomel Torres and Scott David each scored easily, however, on Landecker's double in the bottom half of the inning, handing Fire pitcher Ben Heller a loss.
-- After giving up a three-run lead in the ninth inning, the Peninsula Oilers rebounded for a 5-4 win in 11 innings Friday against the Anchorage Bucs, in an ABL game at Mulcahy Stadium.
Patrick Wisdom scored the winning run on a Troy Channing double, and Brandon Kizer pitched a perfect 11th inning to earn a save. Channing finished with three hits, Wisdom drew four walks and scored twice and Reese McGraw was the winning pitcher.
McGraw relieved Tyler Blum in the bottom of the ninth, after Blum surrendered a hit, issued a walk and hit two batters to set up the Bucs comeback.
The Bucs loaded the bases with no outs and tied the score at 4-4 when Tyler Wagner's base hit up the middle drove in Ryan Palermo.
-- The ABL's busy weekend continues today at Mulcahy Stadium. The first of three games starts at 1 p.m., when the Pilots host the Peninsula Oilers. The Bucs will host the Athletes in Action Fire at 4 p.m., and then host the Mat-Su Miners at 7 p.m.
Sunday's all-star activities begin with a home-run derby at 2 p.m., followed by the all-star game at 4 p.m.
