AROUND THE HORN

-- In the major leagues, it's considered bad luck to do well in the home run derby. Apparantly this is not true in the Alaska Baseball League.

Both players in Sunday's final round of the derby in Anchorage -- Adam Martin and Patrick Wisdom -- hit two-run homers on Monday to propel their ballclubs to victories:

-- Martin continued his big fly ways on Monday evening at Hermon Bros. Field, belting a two-run go-ahead home run that lifted his Mat-Su Miners to a 5-3 triumph over the Anchorage Bucs.

Martin, the Miners catcher and a freshman from Western Carolina, was the home run derby champion.

Ben Graff (1-2) earned the pitching win for Mat-Su in relief with Brandon Hedrick wriggling out of a tough jam in the ninth to earn his third save of the summer.

Bucs hard-luck starter Bradley Drust (0-5) absorbed the defeat. Matthew Harjung collected three singles for the Bucs.

-- The streaking Kenai Peninsula Oilers got a two-run, game-changing blast from third baseman Wisdom in the seventh inning to defeat the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 8-4 at Mulcahy Stadium.

It was Wisdom's fourth ABL home run, tops in the league.

Wisdom, a sophomore from St. Mary's (Calif.) College, also singled in a run in the first inning as the Oilers, 23-10 overall, extended their ABL lead to four games over the second-place Bucs.

Oilers first baseman Jeff Yamaguchi homered in the ninth inning with one on. Kenai starting pitcher Ben Griset went six innings and was the winner.

Pilot pitcher Derrick Dingleman went eight innings and took the loss.

Shortstop Brady Hohl had three hits for the Pilots.
