Shepherd finished 461st in a field of 6,865 entrants, all of whom put down a $10,000 entry fee, or buy-in. The Main Event is the most lucrative table in poker, with a prize pool or more than $64 million. The winner will receive $8.71 million and the top eight will all pocket at least $1 million.
Shepherd was the 15th Alaskan to earn cash in the tournament, which features 58 different tournaments and culminates with the Main Event. In 2010, 19 Alaskans cashed in the WSOP.
Here's how three other Alaskans fared in WSOP events earlier this month:
• Young Ji of Anchorage won $12,261 after taking 46th place in a No-Limit Hold'em tournament that required a buy-in of $1,500 and lured a field of 3,389 players.
• Jeremy Kriner of Soldotna won $2,882 for finishing 332nd in the same event in which Ji cashed.
• William Garner of Anchorage won $4,241 for finishing 97th in a No-Limit Hold'em event that drew 4,576 entrants and required a $1,000 buy-in.
