AROUND THE HORN
-- Joe Winterburn's two-run, walk-off home run with two out in the bottom of the 13th inning Tuesday night earned the Anchorage Bucs a 6-4 win over the Alaska Baseball League-leading Peninsula Oilers at Mulcahy Stadium.
Winterburn mashed his second homer of the summer off reliever Tyler Blum (0-1) to pull the second-place Bucs to within four games of the Oilers. The winning runs were unearned after Peninsula shortstop Manny Acosta committed a throwing error to start the bottom of the 13th.
Winterburn went 2 for 4 with a double, homer, run scored and three RBIs. Keenan Cook furnished three hits for the Bucs and drove in two runs.
Right-hander Braden Shipley (2-0) pitched three hitless innings of relief and struck out five to seize the win.
The Bucs led 4-0 through four innings before the Oilers rallied with a two-run fifth inning and a two-run seventh inning that included Acosta's game-tying single.
-- Justin Kemp pitched four scoreless innings of relief to shut down Athletes in Action and its early bountiful offense, and shortstop Brady Hohl drove in three runs Tuesday afternoon to spark the Anchorage Glacier Pilots to an 8-6 ABL win.
After Pilots starter Philip Walby struggled in three-plus innings and the last-place Fire earned a 5-4 lead at Mulcahy Stadium, Kemp permitted two hits.
In three seasons with the Pilots, Kemp is a combined 8-2 with five saves and a 1.65 earned-run average. Trevor Bayless got the last four outs to secure his league-leading fifth save. After a brutal start to the season, the Pilots have won nine of their last 11 games.
Trailing 5-4, the Pilots erupted for a three-run fifth inning that featured Hohl's two-run single. He added another RBI single in the seventh inning and ended the game with a fine fielding play on a ball hit up the middle.
The Glacier Pilots pounded out 13 hits and did a good job of escaping too much damage from their largesse -- Pilots pitchers walked 10 batters and hit three others.
