The campground's volunteer host, Rick Saynert, says the bear woke the couple inside the van when it got onto the van's hood.
"They hit their panic button on the horn, and the bear was not at all alarmed at that, but rather proceeded to crawl on the top of their minivan and try to force its way into the van via the moon roof," Saynert said.
The out-of-town couple has since left Sitka on a ferry. Saynert says the campers at the neighboring site - a family with small children in a tent - also left after the incident.
Saynert told KCAW anyone looking for a thrilling bear encounter should just stay the heck away from Starrigavan.
"The less people, the less stress," he said. "For me and the bear. Because when they come out here and wander around and so forth, it does elevate my stress level. I really don't want any incidents under my watch."
