Kikkan, Kiplagat win Run for Good 5K

July 23, 2011

Under sunny skies Saturday, nordic ski star Kikkan Randall showed it's not just about the snow, running a scorching five kilometers on downtown streets to win the inaugural Run for Good 5K in 17 minutes, 6 seconds.

David Kiplagat and Jerome Ross waged a heated battle in the men's race. Kiplagat, a former UAA standout from Kenya, stormed past Ross on the homestretch to win in 14:55. Ross finished in 14:58.

Randall enjoyed a comfortable win, but the race for second place among the women came down to a sprint, with Halladie Wilt nipping Leslie Varys. Both finished in 17:58.

The race offered a purse that paid the men's and women's overall winners $1,000 apiece; second place was worth $300 and third place $100.

Masters-division winners also picked up $100. Monica Ross was the top masters woman in 18:17 and Jeff Heuseveldt was the top master man in 16:46.

A field of 514 finished the race. Proceeds will benefit the Anchorage Boys & Girls Club.
