AROUND THE HORN
-- The Peninsula Oilers held off a couple potential rallies in the valley Sunday to edge the Mat-Su Miners 7-5 at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer. It was the only game of the day in the ABL.
Ben Griset surrendered one hit and one run in five innings for the win, but the Oilers bullpen struggled, allowing the Miners to cut into a 7-1 lead.
Brandon Kizer, the fourth of five Peninsula pitcher, walked two in a row with one out in the eighth before giving way to Reese McGraw, who walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. A foul out to third base and a strikeout stranded all three runners.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Miners put their leadoff batter aboard on a walk and two outs later added another baserunner when McGraw hit a batter. But Mat-Su's Tim Zier, representing the potential winning run, hit into a fielder's choice to allow the Oilers to escape with victory.
