Max Croes, a spokesman for Sen. Mark Begich, said Tuesday that the office is hearing from both sides of the issue but that much of the call volume increase is from those "asking for Washington to get something done and protect the interests of Alaskans."

Meredith Kenny, a spokeswoman for Rep. Don Young, said there's a "mixed bag of messages" in the many calls Young's receiving.

Aug. 2 has been identified as the date by which the government will exhaust its ability to borrow money and pay its bills. Begich and Sen. Lisa Murkowski have expressed frustration with what they see as politics clouding the debate.
