The city will close one mile of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail just south of Point Woronzof beginning Monday for a week, the Parks and Recreation Department announced this week.
The trail will be resurfaced during that period. It has stretches with long, longitudinal cracks that some cyclists call "alligator cracks" for their potential to cause a crash, said parks superintendent Holly Spoth-Torres. There will not be a detour because of the trail's isolation and nearness to an airport runway, a bluff and a water treatment facility. The cost is estimated at $80,000. The money is coming from the Parks Department's regular budget, said Spoth-Torres. These repairs -- from Mile 4.1 to 5.1 -- are the start of a multiyear plan to rehabilitate the popular trail, the city said. The so-called "blue bridge" at Mile 6.6 is also scheduled to be resurfaced this year. Mileposts for the Coastal Trail start with zero at Westchester Lagoon.
