AROUND THE HORN
-- Peninsula Oilers shortstop Mike Miller was named Alaska Baseball League player of the year Saturday morning and he made voters proud Saturday evening. Reaching base four times with two hits and two walks, the leadoff hitter scored three times in the Oilers 7-2 win over the Athletes in Action Fire at Seymour Memorial Park.
Chris Mallory, who finished with three hits, four RBIs and a run, drove in Miller with a first-inning double and drove him in again with a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead. Tanner Rust added two hits, a stolen base and a run for the Oilers, and relief pitcher James Mannara struck out five over six scoreless innings to pick up a win.
Ryan Miller went 2 for 3 and scored a run for the Fire.
-- Stephen Branca's grand slam in the sixth inning Saturday completed a six-run rally for the Mat-Su Miners as they marched toward a 10-7 comeback ABL win over the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Miners fell behind early when Boomer Collins ripped a two-run homer for the Bucs in the first inning, and they trailed 4-3 after five innings. The Miners' Michael Gerlach led off the top of the sixth with a double and Ryan Ford's two-run base hit gave the Miners their first lead.
Brandon Hedrick (2-2) earned a win for a Mat-Su pitching staff that walked 12 batters and hit two more. Mason Guymon contributed three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Miners, and Collins went 3 for 4 with four RBIs for the Bucs.
-- ABL coaches and broadcasters voted on five awards issued Saturday, and Peninsula's Miller picked up player of the year and the gold glove award. Through Friday, Miller played in 40 games this summer and was hitting .359 with an on-base percentage of .472, 33 runs scored, 9 doubles, three triples, one home run, 21 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
Showing impressive discipline at the plate, Miller struck out just seven times and drew 28 walks in 145 at-bats, and it was no surprise he won the gold glove award, having committed just five errors in 219 chances.
Miller's teammate Patrick Wisdom won the silver slugger award after leading the Oilers with seven homers and 35 RBIs through Friday. He drew 35 walks and hit .296.
