Sale to editor saves Cordova newspaper from closure

Published: August 2, 2011

One of the six weekly publications in the soon-to-be shuttered Alaska Newspapers Inc. chain has a new owner.

Calista Corp. announced Tuesday it is selling the Cordova Times to Jennifer Gibbins, the editor for the last year. Terms weren't disclosed.

The first publication date under her ownership will be determined. She says she is evaluating how to structure the paper using print and web technologies.

Calista announced plans to close and liquidate the chain July 22.

The other five weeklies are the Arctic Sounder, the Bristol Bay Times, the Dutch Harbor Fisherman, the Seward Phoenix Log and the Tundra Drums.

The Alaska Native corporation says the last publications will be Aug. 15, and the newspaper office will close Aug. 31.

Calista says it's entertaining offers for the other papers.
