Shootout doubles up Turkey Day helpings

THANKSGIVING: Schedule conflict means women will play Thursday games.

UAA unveiled the women's and men's pairings for the annual Great Alaska Shootout basketball tournament, and it turns out Thanksgiving Day will feature a bigger feast than usual.

The four-team women's Shootout has long been a Tuesday-Wednesday gig, but because of a scheduling conflict for Central Michigan, the program that only recently signed to complete the field, this year's tournament will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 23-24.

That change turns Thanksgiving Day, which has long featured two opening-round men's games on the second day of that tournament, into a four-game day at Sullivan Arena, with two women's games and two men's games.

The women's third-place game will take place at 2 p.m., with the title clash to follow at 4 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the Central Michigan men will face New Mexico State, with UC Irvine and Southern Mississippi meeting at 8:30 p.m.

UAA's women open the tournament Wednesday, Nov. 23 with a 4 p.m. game against Miami (Fla.). That game will be preceded by the tournament opener pitting Central Michigan against South Florida.

The Seawolves men open their tournament at 6:30 p.m. on that Wednesday night, facing Murray State. The evening closes with Dartmouth's men facing San Francisco at 8:30 p.m.

The Shootout, a UAA staple since 1978, when it debuted at Buckner Fieldhouse on Fort Richardson, is the longest-running regular-season basketball tournament in the nation.

Two of the three women's teams from Outside have Shootout history, though from decades ago -- Miami played in both the 1984 and 1987 tournaments, and South Florida was in the field in 1983.

On the men's side, however, the seven invited teams have only scant history in the tournament. New Mexico State won the 1992 Shootout by beating Illinois in the championship game and UC Irvine finished sixth in the 1990 field. Central Michigan, Dartmouth, Murray State, San Francisco and Southern Mississippi all will make their Shootout debuts.
