A Seattle Weekly food blogger, apparently surprised by the popularity of farmers markets in Alaska, called Amy Pettit of the Alaska Division of Agriculture to find out what's going on up here. "It's been exponential and wonderful," Pettit said. "Like everywhere else, local food has really boomed here."
Sitka, Kodiak, Wrangell and Thorne Bay were among communities getting new markets this summer, Pettit said. She lamented, though, that Alaska-grown produce isn't showing up in Alaska supermarkets more often, especially in smaller communities.
