Big-money derby fish still at sea

Published: August 20, 2011

The 56th annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby ends today at noon, and although a pair of impressive 19-pounders top the leaderboard, big-money fish are still swimming in Resurrection Bay. Only two of the 15 tagged fish have been caught, and the one worth $50,000 is still out there. Phillip Lazenby of Kenai is poised to pocket $10,000 if no one catches a silver bigger than the 19.15-pounder he hauled in last Sunday.

Tom Harmer of Anchorage is in second place, worth $5,000, with a 19.02-pound fish. Third place, which is worth a Holland America cruise for two, belongs to Karen Pauley of Seal Beach, Calif., and her 17.94-pound fish.

Derby tickets are $10.
