And for the second year in a row Baker and all the lunch bunch at the Palmer Senior Center a special treat earlier this month thanks to Northern District Setnetters Association that set aside portions of two days catch for the seniors at the Palmer Center.
According to Baker, the now annual dinner is "a wonderful thing, a blessing." He goes on to explain that for many seniors, fresh salmon is too expensive to enjoy especially in this tight economy.
For most, the dinner is not only about great food, but also about memories and tall tales of the one that got away oh so many years ago.
Baker is a board member at the center and is quick to point out that the Palmer Senior Center provides much more than meals for its over 2,000 clients, many of whom receive meals at home through the Meals on Wheels program.
His favorite events are the many trips the center organizes for members to places like Talkeetna, Whittier or Eklutna Lake.
The Silvers for Seniors program was the brainchild of fisherwoman Page Herring and husband Bob Cellers, who worked with fellow Northern District Setnetters to double this year's donation. Chef Jeff Dunks expected to serve 600 fresh salmon meals this year, double that of last year.
The ice filled tote used by Northern District Setnetters Association members to deliver the silvers to the Palmer Senior Center was provided by Copper River Seafoods.
