Another Fairbanks-based soldier with the 1st Stryker Brigade has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Army reported today.

Spc. Douglas Jay Green, 23, of Sterling, Va., was killed Sunday when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire, the Army said. Two other soldiers from the brigade were wounded.

Green was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He was based at Fort Wainwright, where he served as an infantryman.

Green joined the Army in September 2007. He graduated from basic and advanced training at Fort Benning, Ga., and arrived in Alaska in March 2008. He previously was deployed to Iraq from September 2008 to September 2009.

The 4,000-soldier brigade deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011 for a one-year tour.

So far in 2011, there have been 16 combat deaths of soldiers with U.S. Army Alaska, said Lt. Col. William Coppernoll.

Green's next of kin have been notified, the Army said. A memorial ceremony will be held at Fort Wainwright. Details on it haven't yet been released.
