Coast Guard rescues ailing man

KODIAK -- The Coast Guard said one of its helicopters has medevaced an ailing 47-year-old man from a 422-foot tanker more than 500 miles southwest of Kodiak.

The Maltese-flagged tanker Murray Star called for help Thursday, reporting a crew member was found unconscious and needed medical assistance.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally said the helicopter flew 345 miles to Sand Point, refueled and flew on to the tanker. The helicopter crew safely hoisted the patient aboard and flew back to Sand Point. The man was then transferred to commercial medical services that took him to Anchorage for further medical treatment.
